After their defeat at Emirates Old Trafford on Sunday, England are 1-0 down with three to play.
Rain delayed the start to the day-night fixture in Birmingham, but the match got under way at 2.20pm, with no overs reduction yet.
Under cloudy skies and with more rain forecast, it was no surprise when Australia captain Michael Clarke chose to bowl first.
The tourists made one change to their winning side, bringing fast bowler Josh Hazlewood in for leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed.
