Royals pay respects to war dead

04:05, Sep 13 2012

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to pay their respects at a Commonwealth war cemetery as their Diamond Jubilee tour of Singapore draws to a close.

During the Second World War thousands of British and Commonwealth servicemen lost their lives in defence of Singapore and in the subsequent occupation by Japanese forces.

The royal couple will pay tribute to their sacrifice by laying a wreath made of local flowers at the Kranji Commonwealth War Cemetery.

Afterwards William and Kate will travel to the next stop on their tour of the Far East - Malaysia - and fly to Kuala Lumpur.

Their first event will be a lunch hosted by Prime Minister Najib Razak at his official residence.

Later, the royal couple will visit Hospis Malaysia, a leading hospice in the capital Kuala Lumpur where the Duchess will make her first speech on foreign soil.

Kate is patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices and she is keen to use her trip to learn more about how the hospice movement works in Malaysia.

During their visit the royals will tour the building and meet child and adult users of the hospice and their families, before they are invited to unveil a plaque to commemorate their visit.

In the evening the Duke and Duchess will attend an official dinner given by Malaysia's sovereign The Agong at his official residence, the Istana Negara.
