Animal rights' protesters are urging Tammies to boycott a controversial circus performing at Birch Coppice this weekend. Peter Jolly's Circus, the last circus in Britain to have a performing bear, starts on April 27 off the A5 and the Captive Animals' Protection Society are hoping to arrange a protest. CAPS campaign manager, Craig Redmond said: "CAPS is not opposed to circuses, only to the use of animals which is outdated. Nobody needs to see animals performing for entertainment anymore. "To help these animals people need to avoid these circuses, it's as easy as that. Instead people should visit one of the many excellent circuses that rely only on human skills." Other animals at the circus include horses, snakes, zebras and camels. There are only seven other animal circuses left in the UK. A spokesman for North Warwickshire Borough Council said that the circus needed permission to perform because they will be providing live music and the police had no objections to the circus being there. She said: "The concern about the use of live animals comes under the jurisdiction of Trading Standards." Andrew Levett, from Warwickshire County Council Trading Standards, said: "The controversy that exists will be over the principle of using caged animals. Our area of control relates to the condition that they are kept in. "When a circus comes into Warwickshire with live animals then we will have to look to make sure all live animals are being kept in a healthy condition. "We have no power to deal with the principle of having caged animals or performing animals." The government has recently announced it will ban the use of some types of wild animal in travelling circuses under the new Animal Welfare Bill. |
